Institute for Ocean Plastic Recycling

The start of a pilot project

Institute of
Ocean Plastic Recycling

The start of a pilot project.

Our plan.

The design of a global problem solving.

We have made it our mission to find a solution
against the littering of the world’s oceans.

This is a pilot project, for which we are responsible. We learn from the mistakes we will make in the implementation of the pilot project.
To develop a multiplicable solution for the whole world.

The problem.

Why change needs to take place.

Within the last 200 years
is the world population of
1 billion people to just under
8 billion.

Every year,
80 million
more people are added,
what the population size is
of Germany.

1 additional
Germany per year

As the world’s population grows, the amount of garbage is growing in parallel. To date, 8.3 billion tonnes of plastics have been produced, of which
4.9 billion tonnes ended up in landfills or in the environment. Globally, 72% of used plastic packaging is not recycled. (Source: Ellen McArthur Foundation (2015): The new Plastics Economy, p. 26)

32% of used plastic packaging enters the environment uncontrollably.

(Source: ebd.)

As a result of this development, and in view of the increasing world population, there is a vehement need for a solutionto which the problem of ocean littering is rapidly tackled.
The scales do not allow us to wait for further research or knowledge. The need for action is now.

The cause.

Where change needs to take place.

Most of the plastic waste entering the seas
countries of Southeast Asia are responsible for:
Half of them come from China, Indonesia,
Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.

THE CAUSE:
In the daily concern for sufficient food
there is no room for concern for
appropriate packaging disposal.

Developing countries, in addition to the
omnipresent concern for existence
not only with the disposal of your own
plastic waste,
but through waste exports also
with that of many industrialised countries.

(Source: Süddeutsch Zeitung, 2019)

THE CONSEQUENCE:
Plastic waste arrives without a disposal system
directly into the environment.

Meet as an industrial country
no fear of existence. We live in safety
and wealth – self-realization is
our greatest need.

So we see ourselves
responsibility to address this problem.

The consequence.

What consequences threaten us.

The status quo.

Why we need to act now.

Since industrialization, durable plastic and plastic products have found their way into our daily lives. However, no complete system has been developed to remove these products sustainably.

The damage done by the human family must be repaired.

We are convinced that we already have all the necessary technical and structural resources at our disposal. The Fraunhofer Institute* and other institutes have already developed sustainable solutions. Because their task is research and development, it needs the initiative to bring together and coordinate all these opportunities. And it is already high time to do so.

What is missing is a team that assembles and projects all the building blocks.

The initial situation.

The initial situation.

Plastic is absolutely necessary.

We do not question the existence and necessity of plastic.
The material plastic is fundamental to human life in the 21st century.

EXKURS: Socially relevant locations of plastic

Due to the significant weight savings, plastics are elementary materials in vehicle and aircraft construction and contribute to an immense saving of fuel. In the food industry, plastic packaging materials form the basis for ensuring a practicable shelf life of fresh foods such as meat and dairy products, as well as for imported fruits and vegetables. In the medical field, plastic objects such as prostheses, hoses and equipment are the pioneers for hygiene, health and progress.

It is not plastic that is the problem, but its disposal.
Plastic does not belong in the environment.

Our vision.

What are our objectives.

We turn the waste in the sea into a raw material
with a valuethat can be quantified,
investors and companies discover this raw
material
as a business model for themselves.

We are a consultancy whoseprimary objective is to work to ensure that the vast quantities of plastic waste from the world’s oceans are removed sustainably. If necessary, the project will become a government grant model that can be refinanced with plastic taxes. This would be the purpose-built basis of a plastic tax. We attribute a period of 10 years to our project.

Our idea.

We are closing the gap in the economic cycle.

“From cradle to cradle.”

We are convinced that
that this can only be achieved,
if we can sustainably use this waste
insert into the economic cycle
or the existing cycle
Expand.

(based on the principle of “Cradle to Cradle”)

Our concept.

Our approach.

Extraction of raw materials by ships that are equipped and equipped.

Ships with mechanical equipment.
Special devices enable efficient pick-up of the raw material as well as lossless compression in containers. In this way, the maximum utilization of the ships is guaranteed.

For the realization of these ships, we network companies with institutions,
which can supply all components:

shipping companies, for the purchase of ships. Fraunhofer Institute* for Technology
for picking up the raw material. Mechanical engineering companies for on-board press mechanics.

We are currently in the contact and calculation phase with potential partners,
to find out the total cost of a ship with such a facility.

Our contacts.

shipping companies for the provision of ships.

We have already been able to hold initial discussions with numerous shipping companies and achieve a high level of interest on the part of the company. As soon as there is certainty that the project is wanted, desired and accompanied, we can take further steps.

Potential partner shipping companies
Reederei Nord GmbH
Offen Group
RH2 Reederei Hamburger Llyd
Hammonia Reederei
Dettmer Group KG
Heino Winter GmbH

Associations
German Boat and Shipbuilders Association
Association for Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering

Our contacts.

From applied research.

The Fraunhofer Institute* already has fully developed machines and technologies that are ready for use.
Through this cooperation, we benefit from the extensive scientific expertise of the Fraunhofer Institute* in the areas of recycling, sorting and further processing.

As an independent non-profit organisation, the fraunhofer institute*’s services are incurned by corresponding costs. Once the funding is secured, we can begin the next steps in cooperation.

Our contacts.

Latest technology from engineering companies.

In case of realization we strive for cooperation with machine building companies, which are able to implement the latest technology.

Special technologies are needed that compress the raw material on ships without loss and allow maximum utilization of the loading capacity.

As potential partners, we are considering market-leading engineering companies with whom we will tackle accurate calculation and planning in the next step.

Our funding.

How our goals become achievable.

For a problemthat concerns us all,
we also see the solution as the responsibility of all.

The project will be fully funded by public funding and will be
participation of institutions, public authorities and companies.
After a first run and a quantification of all processes and resources
the industry can start the project.

This megaproject can only be realized with support.
We are a non-profit organization and our legal form is
likely to become a non-profit limited liability company.

Our approach.

How we approach the project:

We bring people, businesses, governments and countries together to address this challenge globally.

We inform people, institutes, authorities, politicians, governments – just anyone who has moved on this issue – about our plans.

We are talking to shipping companies and machine builders in order to
binding calculation of the
costs.

We agree on cooperations
with already existing
organisations to identify possible
synergies.

We provide a location analysis
order to find a location to which the IFOPR can provide economic
benefits and growth. Subsequently, discussions will be
with the respective governments
on the implementation of the port
with industrial park.

worldwide locations.

Low environmental performance.

Short transport distances from waste to finished product.

The environmental balance serves as a basis for the ecological
sustainability of a product or service.

Due to the fact that the plastic waste only needs to be transported to the port once
and the complete subsequent production chain from plastic waste to the finished product in
close to the port, we achieve the lowest possible environmental balance.

Due to the direct connection to international infrastructure to air, land and water, short transport routes and a associated low environmental balance are also taken into account when transporting the finished products.

Possible locations.

opportunities and space for growth.

Initial research has already shown that Europe has ports and maritime
which would be ideally suited for the implementation of the pilot project.
Possible locations are therefore Lithuania, Portugal and Greece.

Clear advantages for the final location of our pilot project are emerging
for the local economy: a number of attractive jobs will be created,
the economic structure of the country and prosperity will be increased and the
connection to existing international trade networks.

The availability of EU sustainable investment support programmes has
Entry attractive for companies in many ways: both financially and
to increase the company’s social and environmental commitment.

A possible location.

Lithuania as an attractive point of contact.

One way: The port of Klaipeda in Lithuania.

The port area in Klaipeda, Lithuania is the largest in the country with 498 hectares.
Every year, around 7000 ships from 45 countries arrive, with cargo handling in 2019
46.26 million tonnes.

As an intra-EU port with an international handling, excellent conditions are
for the implementation of the project there.

This EU site makes it possible to use the EU support programmes.

For example, the LIFEfunding programme, which, with a budget of EUR 3.4 billion in the 2014-2020 funding period, will be used to measure environmental and climate protection measures within the framework of
pilot projects within the European Union.

Our focus.

An Institute for theFuture..

The long-term effects of ocean litter will be felt, restrictive and dangerous, especially for future generations. Therefore, IFOPR focuses on nothing but the future.
During the 10-year build-up phase, the expertise of experienced professionals is used to create a stable foundation. The ongoing purification process of the world’s oceans will then be in the hands of the future
Generations.

There is no room for outdated thinking in this project.
What this project needs are the latest ways of thinking, developments, techniques and ideas. A new solution to a problem that cannot be solved with outdated approaches.

Our focus

Our (Wo)Manpower.

Experience and courage for a megaproject.

“What is not possible for the individual,

many create.”

“What is not possible for the individual, many create.”

Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen

As leaders of the future, we want to expand our team with young talents who share our vision and have the will to make a difference.

In the further course, we will gradually expand the IFOPR team to work with the combination of two experienced entrepreneurs and the (where)manpower of young, talented tacklers.
build an innovative network ready for the future.
A team that enables and accomplishes change.

Our conclusion.

It cannot fail, it must not fail.

Necessary.

The need for a solution is undisputed. The plastic problem
grows with an increasing world population and is becoming more and more
health hazard, for us and our habitat.
Based on current research and
scientific evidence.

Realistic.

Thanks to advanced research, the necessary resources are
development in full. What is missing is a team that
that assembles and acts the blocks.

Positive.

The Corporate Social Responsibility of the participating
companies are being fundamentally increased, resulting in effective positive
influences the image.

Complex.

As a global problem, the complexity of this project is clear.
We have the courage and absolute will to implement the IFOPR.
